How much should your Chihuahua eat?

Work out your Chihuahua's daily portion in cups and calories from their weight, age and activity level, using the calories on your own bag of food. It's a starting point based on standard veterinary energy formulas; your vet always has the final word.

Guidance based on standard energy formulas for toy breeds. Adjust to your food's feeding guide and your vet's advice. Every Chihuahua is different.

This calculator doesn't replace your vet.

  • No online formula knows your dog. Body condition, dental health, bloodwork and hidden conditions all change what a Chihuahua needs. Two dogs of the same weight and age can need very different portions.
  • The calories on your bag matter enormously. Small-breed kibbles range from about 350 to 450 kcal per cup. Use your bag's number, and recalculate if you switch brands.
  • Wet food, toppers or raw diets change the math: count their calories too, and take them out of the kibble portion.
  • Special cases need a vet: newly weaned puppies, pregnant or nursing females, spayed or neutered dogs prone to weight gain, and seniors with kidney, liver or heart disease.

How much to feed a Chihuahua: quick chart

For a healthy adult Chihuahua, with a dry food of about 400 kcal per cup. The range runs from low to high activity: a dog who sleeps most of the day sits at the low end.

Dog's weightCalories a dayCups a day
3 lb (1.4 kg)127 – 162 kcalabout 1/3 – 2/5 cup
4 lb (1.8 kg)157 – 201 kcalabout 2/5 – 1/2 cup
5 lb (2.3 kg)186 – 238 kcalabout 1/2 – 3/5 cup
6 lb (2.7 kg)213 – 273 kcalabout 1/2 – 2/3 cup
7 lb (3.2 kg)239 – 306 kcalabout 3/5 – 3/4 cup
8 lb (3.6 kg)264 – 338 kcalabout 2/3 – 5/6 cup

Puppies eat a lot more: up to about twice the adult amount per pound between 2 and 4 months. Use the calculator for them, which applies the right factor. Use a real measuring cup, not a coffee mug: at this size, "a scoop" can be double the portion.

How many times a day should a Chihuahua eat?

  • · 6 to 12 weeks: 4 meals a day
  • · 3 to 6 months: 3 meals
  • · 6 to 12 months: 2 meals
  • · Adult: 2 meals

Notice the adult stays at two and never drops to one. A Chihuahua has tiny glucose reserves, and long stretches without food are exactly what trigger hypoglycemia. One meal a day works for a big dog; not here.

How do I switch from puppy food to adult food?

Between 9 and 12 months, once they've reached adult weight. And always over 7 days, never all at once:

Skipping this is the number one cause of avoidable diarrhea in the breed, and in a 5-pound body diarrhea dehydrates within hours. If your Chihuahua turns down meals altogether, Chihuahua not eating covers the causes and when it's urgent.

Frequently asked questions

How much should an adult Chihuahua eat a day?+
Most healthy adult Chihuahuas of 4 to 6 pounds need roughly 160 to 260 calories a day, which is about 1/3 to 2/3 of a cup of a typical small-breed kibble, split into two meals. The exact amount depends on weight, activity and the calories in your specific food, which is why the calculator asks for the kcal per cup on your bag.
How many times a day should a Chihuahua eat?+
Four times a day from 6 to 12 weeks, three times from 3 to 6 months, and twice a day from 6 months on. In this breed it is best never to drop to one meal a day, even as an adult: long stretches without food raise the risk of hypoglycemia.
How do I know if my Chihuahua is eating too much?+
By touch, not just the scale. You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure without seeing them, and see a waist from above. If you cannot feel the ribs, cut the portion by about 10%. Weigh them once a month and adjust to the trend, not to a single day.
When should a Chihuahua switch from puppy food to adult food?+
Between 9 and 12 months, once they have reached adult weight. Switch over 7 days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old, never all at once, to avoid diarrhea.
Do treats count toward the daily amount?+
Yes, and it is the most common mistake. Treats should stay under 10% of daily calories, and that 10% comes out of the meal portion. A 4-pound Chihuahua has such a small calorie budget that two or three biscuits can blow through it.
Where do I find the calories per cup?+
On the bag, usually near the guaranteed analysis, labeled "Calorie content" and given as kcal/kg and kcal/cup. Small-breed dry foods typically fall between 350 and 450 kcal per cup. If you change brands, recalculate: the difference between two foods can be 25% or more.
