Is my Chihuahua sick?
Check what you see in your Chihuahua and we'll tell you whether it can wait for the next appointment, whether they should be seen today, or whether it's an emergency right now. With a guide for each symptom, written for this breed.
If they can't breathe properly, have blue gums or are seizing, stop reading and go to the emergency vet now. This tool guides; it doesn't diagnose.
What to do
Guidance only · not a substitute for your vetGuidance only. If your gut says something is wrong, even when this says "at home," call your vet. In a 5-pound dog, erring on the side of caution is cheap.
Which symptoms are an emergency in a Chihuahua?
The ones that don't wait until tomorrow. With any of these, the plan is the emergency vet, and a call on the way:
| What you see | Why it can't wait |
|---|---|
| Labored breathing or open-mouth breathing | Fluid in the lungs, a closed windpipe or an obstruction |
| Pale, blue or gray gums | Lack of oxygen, internal bleeding or shock |
| Seizure over 5 minutes or repeated | Status epilepticus: body temperature climbs and damages the brain |
| Puppy that's limp, cold and wobbly | Hypoglycemia: can seize within minutes |
| Repeated vomiting or vomiting blood | Dehydration in hours; possible obstruction or toxin |
| Ate something toxic | In the first two hours vomiting can be induced safely |
| Eye closed, red or with a spot | A corneal ulcer can perforate within hours |
| Fall, stepped on or bitten by a big dog | Internal injuries don't show from the outside |
Why does everything move faster in a Chihuahua?
Five pounds. A big dog has reserves of water, fat and sugar that buy time; a Chihuahua barely has any. A bout of diarrhea that gives a Labrador a bad afternoon dehydrates a Chihuahua overnight. A few hours without food, nothing to a large adult, drops a Chihuahua puppy's blood sugar until they seize.
That's why the rule changes in this breed: what can wait until tomorrow in another dog is often today in a Chihuahua. And why it pays to know the breed's typical conditions before you need to: the eight most common, each with its warning sign, are in common Chihuahua health problems.
What you can do at home while you decide: have the nearest 24-hour emergency vet's number saved (look it up today, not when you need it), a bottle of honey, a carrier ready, and your dog's weight and medications written down. With Romeo and Lorenzo, that lives on a magnet on the fridge.
