Chihuahua Puppy Checklist: What You Actually Need (and What Can Wait)
An honest Chihuahua puppy checklist: what you really need the first month, which size to buy for each item, and what isn't worth spending money on just yet.
When a Chihuahua puppy comes home, the list of things people tell you to buy is enormous. The real Chihuahua puppy checklist is much shorter, and several of the usual purchases are money down the drain, because he’ll outgrow them before he’s used them three times.
This list is built for a puppy between 2 and 4 months old and under 2 pounds, which is the very specific situation with this breed. It comes in two parts: what you need from day one, and what’s better to wait on. If you want the full care guide for that age, it’s in your 2-month-old Chihuahua.
What does a Chihuahua puppy need on day one?
1. Puppy food with mini kibble
This is the most important purchase of all, and the one most people get wrong by grabbing a generic “small breed” formula. The difference is kibble size: a 2-month-old Chihuahua’s jaw can’t handle a piece designed for a Beagle puppy.

Royal Canin X-Small Puppy
★4.8 · 13,018ratings
The X-Small line is made specifically for breeds that will weigh under 9 pounds as adults, which is exactly the Chihuahua. Tiny kibble and high calorie density, which is what a body that eats a very small volume at a time needs.
Heads-up:It's one of the pricier options per pound. Buy the smallest bag: your puppy will take weeks to finish it, and open food loses quality. And around 10 months you'll need to switch formulas.
See it on Amazon →Whatever you choose, look for the AAFCO statement on the bag and make sure it says puppy or “growth,” not just “all life stages” without checking the fine print. How much to feed is handled by the Chihuahua feeding calculator, which applies the puppy factor for you.
2. Potty pads
At 2 months he has no bladder control, so this isn’t optional. The pads always go in the same spot, and mistakes are never punished. The full method, step by step, is in how to potty train a Chihuahua.

Amazon Basics dog and puppy potty training pads
★3.9 · 43,547ratings
The best-selling pad in its category and the cheapest per unit, which matters when you'll use several a day for months.
Heads-up:Its rating is 3.9, which is low compared to the rest of this list: the recurring complaint is leaking with big dogs. For a Chihuahua under 2 pounds that isn't a problem, but don't expect them to handle a Labrador.
See the pads on Amazon →A Chihuahua needs the standard size, not XL. And if you’d rather go with washable pads, they work out cheaper in the long run even though they cost more up front.
3. A carrier or sling bag
It looks like a luxury accessory and it’s the opposite: it’s your puppy’s vehicle until his vaccines are complete. Until then he shouldn’t walk on public ground, so every vet visit, family visit or trip happens inside it.

PetAmi small dog purse carrier
★4.5 · 3,236ratings
Soft, ventilated with mesh, and fitted with an internal safety tether so he can't jump out. It's light enough to carry a 3-pound puppy to the vet or around town, and it doubles as a quiet den he can settle into.
Heads-up:It's a purse-style carrier, not a certified airline carrier: if you'll fly, check your airline's under-seat size before relying on it. For vet trips only, a cheap hard-sided carrier does the same job for less money.
See the PetAmi on Amazon →4. Two small, low bowls
No particular brand needed. What matters is that they’re wide at the base and shallow: a puppy who weighs about a pound can’t reach an elevated bowl, and elevated feeders are designed for large dogs with a different problem. Fresh water, always available.
5. A covered bed
Chihuahuas burrow. It’s a breed instinct, not a quirk. A cave- or igloo-style bed gives them that hideout and avoids the very real risk of a puppy crawling under the comforter on your bed and someone sitting on him.
6. Toy-size chew toys
He’s in the middle of teething and he is going to chew. The only rule: the toy must be smaller than his open mouth but bigger than his throat, and soft. Hard bones and antlers break baby teeth.
What can wait, and why?
The harness
He’ll need one, but not yet. Two reasons: until his vaccines are done he isn’t walking outside, and at 2 months he’s below the minimum size of nearly every harness on the market. Buying one now means buying it twice.
When the time comes, measure his chest girth with a sewing tape and choose by that number, never by breed or weight. There’s a size comparison across brands (it shows that one popular “Small” fits a 14-pound dog) in the best Chihuahua harness guide.
Clothes
He’ll need some in winter, because Chihuahuas really do get cold. But a sweater bought at 2 months won’t fit at 5. Wait.
The collar
Only to hold his ID tag. For clipping on the leash and walking, always a harness: a Chihuahua’s trachea is too narrow to tolerate pulling.
A toothbrush
Important, but you start once his adult teeth are in. Before that, the job is getting him used to having his mouth handled.
What he doesn’t need (and what someone will try to sell you)
- Vitamin supplements. With a complete puppy food they aren’t needed, and some do harm. Nothing without your vet’s say-so.
- Slow-feeder bowls. They’re for dogs who wolf their food; a Chihuahua this age has the opposite problem.
- Huge beds. They feel exposed. They prefer small and enclosed.
- Standard-size toys. Some of them weigh more than he does.
- Large nail clippers. He needs a cat-size or toy-breed clipper, and a steady hand to stay clear of the quick.
The cheapest item that really matters
A kitchen scale. The one you already have will do.
Weigh a Chihuahua puppy once a week, on the same day, on the same scale. Any single week’s number doesn’t matter much: the trend line does. A healthy puppy gains every week, and if the number stalls for two weeks in a row it’s worth a call to the vet even if the weight is “within range.” It’s the cheapest, most reliable indicator you’ll have during the first months, and nobody sells it.
