Best Dog Stairs and Ramps for Chihuahuas: Protect Their Knees
Stairs or a ramp? How to measure your sofa or bed, what step height suits a Chihuahua, and the best dog stairs and ramps for Chihuahuas with sore knees.
A Chihuahua jumping off the sofa looks like nothing. It weighs 5 pounds, it lands on carpet, it does it fifty times a day. That last part is the problem. The best dog stairs and ramps for Chihuahuas solve one of the most underrated risks in the breed: years of small jumps adding up on knees that were fragile to begin with.

Why does jumping hurt a Chihuahua’s knees?
Chihuahuas are one of the breeds most prone to patellar luxation, a kneecap that slips out of its groove. It’s the most common orthopedic problem in toy dogs, and our guide to Chihuahua luxating patella covers the grades, the signs and when surgery makes sense.
Every jump down from a sofa or bed lands the dog’s full weight, multiplied by the drop, onto its front legs and knees. In a young dog, the muscles absorb most of it. In a senior with thinner cartilage and less muscle, a bad landing can mean a limp that doesn’t go away. That’s why our senior Chihuahua care guide puts “stop the jumping” on the list of things to change after ten.
Stairs or a ramp: which is better for a Chihuahua?
| Dog stairs | Dog ramp | |
|---|---|---|
| Floor space | Compact, about 15 x 24 inches for a sofa | Long; a gentle ramp to a bed can be 5 to 6 feet |
| Effort for the dog | Small steps, each one a little climb | Continuous slope, no lifting of the legs |
| Best for | Healthy adults, most seniors, mild patella | Post-surgery, severe arthritis, back problems, nervous climbers |
| Learning curve | Most dogs learn in a few days | Some dogs distrust the slope at first |
| Typical material | High-density foam or plastic | Wood with carpet, or foam |
For most Chihuahuas, stairs are the practical answer: they fit next to a sofa without taking over the room. A ramp is worth the space when your vet has told you to avoid stairs, or when the dog is recovering from knee or back surgery.
How to measure before you buy
This is the step people skip, and the most common reason for a return.
- Measure the landing height: from the floor to the top of the seat cushion or mattress, not the frame.
- Match the top step to that height, or an inch or two below it. A top step higher than the sofa is useless.
- Check the step height: divide the total height by the number of steps. For a dog this size, about 4 to 5 inches per step is comfortable.
- Check the tread depth: each step should be deep enough for the dog to stand on with all four paws.
- For a ramp, check the length. A common rule of thumb is two and a half to three times the height it climbs.
| Furniture | Typical height | What usually fits |
|---|---|---|
| Low sofa or armchair | 14 to 18 in | 3-step stairs, or a 2-in-1 stairs and ramp |
| Standard bed | 18 to 23 in | 4-step stairs |
| High bed | 23 to 27 in | 5-step stairs, or a full-length bed ramp |
The stairs and ramps worth considering
EHEYCIGA foam stairs: the all-rounder

EHEYCIGA foam dog stairs
★4.4 · 11,462ratings
High-density foam with a support board inside, so the steps keep their shape under a dog's weight instead of sinking. Sold in 3, 4 and 5 steps for furniture up to 18, 23 and 27 inches, which makes it easy to match your sofa or bed. The cover comes off for washing, and the non-slip base keeps it from sliding away mid-climb.
Heads-up:Measure your bed or sofa height before ordering; it's the most repeated warning in the reviews. It arrives vacuum-packed and needs 24 to 48 hours to expand, and some owners find it too narrow or a little wobbly.

Gardner Pet 2-in-1 dog stairs and ramp, 3-step (16.5 in)

Use it as three steps, or flip it into a low, gentle foam ramp for days when the knees are sore. The maker pitches it for dogs with knee injuries and older pets, and reviewers with small senior dogs agree. The cover is waterproof and machine washable, and rubber dots underneath help it grip the floor.
Heads-up:The 3-step version is meant for sofas of about 13 to 20 inches, not beds. Several reviewers say it measures a bit shorter than the listed height, and stability gets mixed comments, so measure your sofa and check the top step lines up.

PetSafe CozyUp wooden bed ramp
★4.4 · 8,830ratings
A proper full-length ramp: 70 inches long rising to 25 inches, which works out to a slope of roughly 20 degrees, gentle enough for a dog who shouldn't be climbing steps. Furniture-grade wood with a carpeted surface, and sturdy enough for dogs far heavier than a Chihuahua, so it won't flex under a nervous dog.
Heads-up:It's big and heavy: nearly 6 feet long and about 27 pounds, so it needs a clear strip of floor beside the bed. The height is fixed at 25 inches, which suits a high bed but not a sofa. Traction gets mixed reviews, and some owners find the carpet slippery; a few strips of non-slip tape help.

Most dogs need a few days. A few tips that make it faster:
- Treat trail. One treat on each step, starting from the bottom. Let the dog collect them.
- Never lift the dog onto the middle. They need to learn the whole path.
- Block the old jumping spot with a cushion, or they’ll jump right beside the new stairs.
- Practice going down too. Down is the direction that protects the knees.
- Keep it in the same place. Moving it every day confuses them.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not measuring. The single most common reason for returns.
- A steep “ramp.” Short ramps to high beds can be steeper than stairs.
- Slippery floors at the bottom. Put a rug where the dog lands.
- Placing stairs only on one side when the dog jumps off from three.
- Waiting for a limp. Prevention is the whole point.

Our take
We share our home with an eleven-year-old Chihuahua and a two-year-old, and their knees worry us for opposite reasons. Romeo, at 5.3 pounds and eleven years old, pays more for every jump than he used to. Lorenzo, at 5.1 pounds and full of energy, still believes the sofa is a trampoline.
So the rule in our house is the same for both: up the stairs, and down in someone’s arms or down the stairs, never off the edge. It’s boring, it takes a week to teach, and it’s one of the cheapest things you can do for a Chihuahua’s knees.
