Funny Chihuahua Names: 140 Original Ideas You Haven't Seen

Funny Chihuahua names and original ideas: tough-guy contrast (Tyson, Tony Montana), old-timer names, food, job titles, and the oddest ones our members use.

· 5 min read ·

A Chihuahua is a naturally funny animal: 5 pounds of dog convinced he stands three feet tall. That’s why funny Chihuahua names work better than in any other breed, and why our club, with 160 members, has more names worth laughing at than any golden retriever club out there.

Ours are called Romeo Carlitos and Lorenzo Pablito. Old-man names with a diminutive tacked on (think “Bobby” for a Robert who’s 70). It isn’t the strongest joke on this list, but eleven years later it still gets a laugh when someone at the vet asks, “Is Carlitos the last name?”

What are the funniest names in the club?

And an accidental classic of the genre: half the internet can’t decide how to spell Chihuahua in the first place.

From our real member registry, each one with a member card and number:

  • Tony Montana (Uruguay, #0013). The best name in the registry, and it isn’t up for debate.
  • Bonnie Killer (Ecuador, #0026). A gangster’s-girlfriend name for a dog who fits in a teacup.
  • Madison Cuchicuchi Perata (Argentina, #0025). First name, nickname and last name. Total commitment.
  • Fajita (Peru, #0157). The photo at the top. Cream, senior, with the face of someone who has heard the joke a thousand times.
  • Winnicot (Argentina, #0091). After the psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. A Chihuahua with separation anxiety named after the man who wrote about the capacity to be alone.
  • Herita Verita (Argentina, #0004). A founding member with a name straight out of Tolkien.
  • Poroto (Argentina, #0147; it’s Argentine slang for “bean”), Macarrón (#0146) and Peanuts (#0073). Food, always.
  • Narciso Hugo (Argentina, #0142). A dog who admires himself in puddles.
  • Pepa Ramona and María Pita. The grand-old-lady school, which happens to be ours.
  • Duki and Rusher. Named after a trap artist and a gamer. Times change.
  • Taco (Uruguay), Churro (Chile), Nutella, Mocca, Cookie, Oreo. The whole menu.

Every one of them is in the club’s member directory, with a photo and a member card.

Funny names by contrast

The undisputed king of the genre. A giant’s name for a pocket-size dog. The more he barks, the better it works:

Tyson · Rambo · Hulk · Thor · Conan · Terminator · Tony Montana · Don Corleone · Vito · Rocco · Killer · Tank · Bull · Beast · Titan · Goliath · Samson · Hercules · Maximus · Brutus · Godzilla · King Kong · Chuck Norris (Chuck for short) · Rocky Balboa · Ivan Drago · Apollo · Holyfield · Canelo · The Rock · Butch

For girls: Beast · Fury · Panther · Tigress · Xena · Storm · Ronda · Killer · The Boss · Madam

Names with a job title

A Chihuahua with a title carries himself differently. You can tell:

Professor · Doctor · Judge · Sergeant · Colonel · The General · Captain · Admiral · Sheriff · Deputy · Coach · Chief · Mayor · Senator · Governor · Madam President · Ambassador · Reverend · Sir · Lord · Lady · Duke · Duchess · Baron · Count · Your Majesty · The Honorable

A tip: pick the title, then add a short name for calling him. “Professor” is his name; “Prof” is what you yell across the park.

Old-timer names

Our school of thought. A Chihuahua with a grandpa’s name has a dignity no “Max” will ever reach, and the contrast makes it funny without trying:

Boys: Carlitos · Pablito · Harold · Walter · Herbert · Eugene · Earl · Clarence · Leonard · Bernard · Milton · Stanley · Norman · Gerald · Lloyd · Murray · Irving · Seymour · Chester · Floyd · Mortimer · Ernest · Otis · Vernon · Don Pepe

Girls: Carmencita · Teresa · Doña Petrona · Gertrude · Mildred · Ethel · Agnes · Edna · Bernice · Gladys · Myrtle · Phyllis · Hazel · Mabel · Doris · Eunice · Loretta · Bertha · Wilma · Imelda

Food names nobody else has

Taco and Churro are taken (literally, by members). These aren’t:

Meatloaf · Tater Tot · Pop-Tart · Corndog · Pickles · Nacho · Twinkie · Gravy · Hash Brown · Pancake · Meatball · Biscuit · Pretzel · Nugget · Burrito · Empanada · Chimichurri · Alfajor · Ravioli · Gnocchi · Pierogi · Kielbasa · Pepperoni · Bologna · Salami · Cheeto · Dorito · Tamale · Jalapeño · S’mores

Characters with a double meaning

The ones that only land if you know the character:

Winnicott · Freud · Socrates · Nietzsche (Nietz for short) · Napoleon · Attila · Caligula · Nero · Rasputin · Houdini (if he’s an escape artist) · Sherlock · Watson · Columbo · Poirot · Gollum · Yoda · Gizmo · Stitch · Pikachu · Bender · Homer · Ned Flanders · Ralph · Milhouse · Skinner · Krusty · Sideshow Bob · Tony Soprano · Walter White · Heisenberg · Saul Goodman

One-letter and super-short names

The joke is that the name is as small as the dog:

Bo · Yo · Lu · Pi · Po · Ro · Ti · Zu · K · X · Uno · Zero (we have a member named Zero) · Mini · Micro · Nano · Pixel · Bit · Byte · Chip · Dot

How do you pick a funny name that actually works?

  1. Say it out loud before you decide. Tony Montana in the living room is great; at the park at seven in the morning, it’s a different story. If you still love it, go for it: our member in Uruguay did, and has no regrets.
  2. Have a short version. Your dog learns two syllables. Don Vito Corleone is Vito, Professor is Prof, Popocatépetl is Popo.
  3. Make sure it doesn’t rhyme with a cue. “Kit” sounds like “sit,” “Bo” like “no,” “Ray” like “stay.” A Chihuahua named Kit will spend his life confused.
  4. The joke is for you, not the dog. He only learns a sound and links it to food and affection. Say it once, happily, and reward him when he looks at you; ten times a day for a week usually does it.
  5. You’ll say it twenty times a day for fifteen years. Make sure it still makes you smile on day 5,000. How long do Chihuahuas live? tells you exactly how many days we’re talking about.

Frequently asked questions

What are the funniest names for a Chihuahua?+
The ones that play on the contrast between size and attitude: Tyson, Tony Montana, Beast, Killer, The General. Among our club members, the crowd favorites are Tony Montana (Uruguay), Bonnie Killer (Ecuador), Madison Cuchicuchi (Argentina), Fajita (Peru) and Winnicot (Argentina).
What's a unique name for my Chihuahua?+
An old-timer's name (Romeo Carlitos, Gertrude), a job title (Professor, Madam President), an unexpected food (Meatloaf, Tater Tot) or a full first and last name. Original doesn't mean weird; it means a name that tells you something about the dog.
Is it a bad idea to give a dog a funny name?+
No, as long as you can yell it at the park without embarrassment and it doesn't rhyme with a cue. Your dog doesn't get the joke: he only learns the sound. Pick a clear two-syllable version for calling him, even if his full name is Don Vito Corleone.
Can I give my Chihuahua a first and last name?+
Of course, and it's a club tradition: Romeo Carlitos, Lorenzo Pablito, Pepa Ramona, María Pita, Narciso Hugo, Polly Vega. The last name isn't for calling him; it's for introducing him, which is different and just as important.
